Sean Ono Lennon’s Heartfelt Tribute to Yoko Ono at the 2024 Oscars

Sean Ono Lennon, the son of Yoko Ono and late Beatles legend John Lennon, made a heartwarming gesture at the 2024 Oscars by wishing his mother a happy Mother’s Day during the ceremony. The event, which took place on Sunday, March 10, coincided with Mother’s Day in the U.K. Sean Ono Lennon, who served as an executive producer on the award-winning animated short film “WAR IS OVER! Inspired by the Music of John & Yoko,” took the stage alongside director Dave Mullins and producer Brad Booker to accept the award.

During their acceptance speeches, Sean Ono Lennon took a moment to pay tribute to his mother, Yoko Ono, despite the “wrap-it-up” music playing in the background. He mentioned that his mother had turned 91 in February and asked the audience to join him in wishing her a happy Mother’s Day. The audience responded by collectively wishing the iconic artist a happy holiday.

Sean Ono Lennon is the only child of Yoko Ono and John Lennon, born in 1975. Yoko Ono also has a daughter, Kyoko Chan Cox, from her previous marriage to film producer Anthony Cox. John Lennon, on the other hand, had a son named Julian Lennon from his marriage to his first wife, Cynthia.

The animated short film “WAR IS OVER!,” co-written by Sean Ono Lennon and Dave Mullins, is set against the backdrop of World War I. The film follows a carrier pigeon delivering messages between two soldiers playing a chess game, unaware that they are on opposite sides. Although Sean Ono Lennon did not win the Oscar for the film, his contribution to the project was significant.

Yoko Ono and John Lennon had collaborated on several projects before John’s tragic death in 1980, including the iconic Christmas song “Happy Xmas (War Is Over).” The song, which has become a classic holiday tune, reached No. 38 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2022, over 50 years after its initial release.

Overall, Sean Ono Lennon’s heartfelt tribute to his mother at the 2024 Oscars added a touching moment to the ceremony and highlighted the enduring legacy of Yoko Ono and John Lennon’s artistic collaborations. The gesture served as a reminder of the importance of family and honoring loved ones, even in the midst of celebrating professional achievements.
