Record-Breaking Scores at the 2024 Cognizant Classic: A Historic Event at PGA National’s Champion Course

Champion Course at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens recently witnessed a historic event as golfers at the 2024 Cognizant Classic achieved record-low scores on the challenging course. The tournament saw Champion Austin Eckroat shoot an impressive 17-under, setting a new standard for event winners on the Champion Course. Additionally, a record-breaking 27 golfers managed to shoot 10-under or better during the competition.

This remarkable feat marked a significant departure from previous years, where only a handful of golfers were able to achieve double-digit under par scores. Last year’s Honda Classic, for example, saw Chris Kirk and Eric Cole go to a playoff at 14-under, with just two other players managing to shoot 10-under or better. The 2024 Cognizant Classic, however, showcased a field of golfers capable of taking advantage of the more forgiving conditions on the course.

Despite his comfortable three-stroke victory, Eckroat acknowledged the competitive field nipping at his heels throughout the tournament. The former Oklahoma State standout remained vigilant of his fellow competitors’ scores, particularly noting Min Woo Lee’s impressive 14-under performance on hole No. 15.

Efforts to make the Champion Course more player-friendly have been ongoing in recent years, with changes such as reducing the rough length and adjusting the yardage on challenging par-3s. This year, tournament officials converted hole No. 10 from a par-4 to a par-5, instantly making it the easiest hole on the course. Golfers capitalized on this change, recording 28 eagles and 283 birdies on the hole during the tournament.

While the course modifications provided a more favorable playing experience, Mother Nature intervened with driving rains on Sunday, forcing the tournament to conclude on Monday. Despite the challenges posed by the weather, golfers like Min Woo Lee and Erik Van Rooyen showcased their resilience and adaptability in navigating the course under varying conditions.

The 2024 Cognizant Classic not only highlighted the exceptional talent of the participating golfers but also underscored the evolving nature of the Champion Course at PGA National. As the tournament continues to attract top-tier players and produce record-low scores, golf enthusiasts can look forward to witnessing more thrilling competitions on this renowned course in the future.
