Purdue Basketball Stages Epic Comeback to Beat Minnesota 84-76

Purdue basketball staged an impressive comeback to defeat Minnesota after being down by double digits in their recent game. The No. 2 ranked Purdue Boilermakers (23-2, 12-2) rallied to beat the Minnesota Golden Gophers 84-76 at Mackey Arena on Thursday, extending their winning streak to nine games.

Minnesota started the game with all the momentum, taking a 10-point lead early in the second half. However, the tide turned when Gophers coach Ben Johnson drew a technical foul for his frustration over a missed call. This opened the door for Purdue to make their comeback.

The Boilermakers capitalized on the opportunity and doubled up on Minnesota, outscoring them 18-9 in just under six minutes. This surge allowed Purdue to regain the lead and take control of the game. Minnesota had initially stolen Purdue’s double-digit advantage with their hot shooting from beyond the arc, making 9 of 16 three-pointers in the first half.

The game remained competitive until Purdue took a 10-point lead at 70-60. However, Minnesota fought back with a run of their own, keeping the outcome uncertain until the final minutes. It was Mason Gillis’ three-pointer with 2:17 left on the clock that gave Purdue an eight-point cushion and ultimately secured the victory.

Despite facing foul trouble early on, Purdue’s Zach Edey delivered an outstanding performance. Edey, the team’s big man, finished the game with 24 points and 15 rebounds. He also moved closer to breaking the Purdue career rebounding record, currently held by Joe Barry Carroll, as he is now just five boards shy of the milestone.

Three players stood out for their contributions in the game. Braden Smith, a sophomore for Purdue, flirted with a triple-double, recording 16 points, 9 assists, and 8 rebounds. Mason Gillis provided crucial three-pointers for Purdue, finishing with 14 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists. On the Minnesota side, Dawson Garcia led his team with 24 points, making an impact both from the free-throw line and beyond the arc.

Purdue’s victory against Minnesota keeps their unbeaten record at Mackey Arena intact for the season. The team has been on an impressive winning streak and continues to solidify their position as one of the top teams in college basketball.

The win against Minnesota is a testament to Purdue’s resilience and ability to overcome adversity. They showed great composure and determination in their comeback, ultimately securing a crucial victory. With their strong performance, Purdue basketball remains a force to be reckoned with in the NCAA.
