Leap Year Birthday Holds Special Meaning for Family of Oakland Twin Boys

The Erickson family of Oakland celebrates a unique and special occasion every four years on February 29th. This day holds a significant meaning for them as their twin boys were born on this rare date in 2016. The twins, Miles and Walter, were born just 11 minutes apart, with Miles arriving in the final minutes of February 28th and Walter in the first minutes of Leap Day.

According to their mother, Summer Erickson, mornings in their household are filled with chaos as they try to get their three boys ready for the day. The twins, along with their older brother Bruce, enjoy playing basketball in the morning and have boundless energy that keeps them active throughout the day. They recently welcomed a new addition to their family, a puppy named Bagel, who has quickly become a favorite among the boys.

For Walter, who is turning eight this year but likes to joke that he’s only two due to his leap year birthday, having a puppy was a dream come true. He expressed his love for dogs and how much he enjoys playing with them.

The Erickson family’s journey with the twins was not without challenges, as the boys were born prematurely at 26 weeks and spent 69 days in the NICU at Sutter Alta Bates Summit Medical Center in Berkeley. The uncertainty and fear they experienced during that time made them appreciate the gift of bringing their boys home even more.

In honor of their incredible story and the care they received at the NICU, the family plans to host a celebration this weekend. Instead of gifts for the boys, they are asking for donations to be made to the NICU as a way of giving back and expressing their gratitude.

One of the family’s traditions on the boys’ birthdays is allowing each of them to choose where they want to have dinner and dessert on the evening of their special day. This tradition allows the boys to feel special and have a say in how they celebrate their birthdays, especially when they fall on different days.

As the Erickson family looks forward to this year’s leap year celebration, they reflect on the journey they have been on and the joy that their twin boys bring to their lives. The tradition of celebrating every four years serves as a reminder of the strength and resilience of their family and the importance of cherishing each moment together.
