Green Bay Packers Secure Xavier McKinney in NFL Free Agency Splash

The Green Bay Packers have made a significant move in the NFL free agency market by landing former New York Giants safety Xavier McKinney on a four-year deal worth $68 million, according to multiple reports. This deal will make McKinney one of the highest-paid safeties in the NFL.

McKinney, who will turn 25 in August, emerged as the top available safety in free agency after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers franchise-tagged Antoine Winfield Jr. His reported contract with the Packers will place him as the fifth-highest paid safety in the league in terms of average annual salary at $17 million, as per Spotrac.

Selected in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft, McKinney spent the first four seasons of his career with the Giants, starting in 46 out of 49 total appearances. During his time with the Giants, he accumulated nine interceptions, 27 passes defended, and 279 total tackles. In the 2023 season, McKinney recorded career highs in passes defended (11) and total tackles (116) while also securing three interceptions.

This move comes after the Packers reportedly reached an agreement with former Las Vegas Raiders running back Josh Jacobs earlier in the day. The addition of McKinney to the Packers’ roster adds depth and talent to their defense, solidifying their position as contenders in the upcoming season.

On the other hand, the Giants have now lost two of their top free agents, with running back Saquon Barkley reportedly agreeing to a three-year deal with division rivals, the Philadelphia Eagles. This shift in the free agency landscape will undoubtedly have an impact on both teams as they prepare for the upcoming NFL season.

Overall, the Packers’ acquisition of Xavier McKinney is a significant move that bolsters their defense and sets them up for success in the competitive landscape of the NFL. As the free agency period continues, it will be interesting to see how these roster changes play out on the field and impact the upcoming season. Stay tuned for more updates on NFL free agency and the latest player signings.
